The participation of Shuar women in the application of indigenous justice
Abstract
The objective of this research was to analyze the participation of Shuar women in the application of indigenous justice. The scope of the research is descriptive in nature, analyzing events based on observations. The results of the research conducted in three Shuar communities in eastern Ecuador show that women do not participate in decision-making when applying indigenous justice, but only participate when executing sanctions, in violation of Article 171 of the Constitution of the Republic of Ecuador. In conclusion, it has been determined that the sample studied has become a vulnerable group throughout its history and that gender equality in indigenous communities, mainly since the 2008 Constitution, marks a major advance in the recognition of their rights, but legal loopholes still exist.
